Blencowe Families’ Association Newsletter | Vol. 17 No. 2 Summer 2002 |
As a newcomer to this association I would like to introduce my Blencowe ancestors and myself. My great grandmother, Lucy Ann Blencowe, was born in Neithrop, Banbury in 1870. Both her father and grandfather were tailors. Lucy Ann lost her mother at the age of seven and her father remarried. In the 1881 census Jack Blencowe found Lucy Ann’s father in Oxford Prison and his second wife in Banbury Workhouse. So far, Lucy Ann’s whereabouts at that time are unknown. Her brother, Richard Nathaniel (1866 - 1897), was apparently working then as a servant-errand boy at Neithrop and later acted as a witness at his sister’s marriage. Lucy Ann married in 1896 into a fairly wealthy family but, sadly, died ten years later leaving two young daughters aged 5 and 9, the elder being my grandmother; she emigrated to Canada in 1919 as a newlywed and I am a Canadian.
For the past five years I have worked as a counsellor in a women’s college in the United Arab Emirates, which has been an amazing learning experience. My husband, our 10-year-old son, and I live in Fujairah, a small city on the Gulf of Oman. Since we became expatriates we have been fortunate to travel to a number of countries.
At present my genealogical research is limited to what I can find on the Internet except for summers, when we leave the U.A.E. I am grateful to Jack Blencowe and my English cousins for providing me with most of the information I have on Lucy Ann and her family. Jack believes William Henry senior may be the son of William Henry Blincko (born c. 1875 in Whitechapel) and Sally or Sarah (born c. 1791 in Christchurch, Southwark). If this is the case, I can take my Blencowe line back four generations beyond those shown on this page. I hope to link my family to some of the other Blencowe families and welcome any correspondence in this regard.
