Jean and her 4 great, great grandchildren |
Evelyn Jean Blencowe, the daughter of George and Matilda Blencowe was born in Tamworth, NSW on 21 April 1915; the day our ANZAC troops set sail on that fateful journey to Gallipoli. She will be 93 by the Reunion. Jean moved to Leeton with her family in about 1921, moving to Griffith a few years ago.
In 1936 Jean married Eddie Luhrs and the couple spent their working lives with the Letona Cannery.
They were blessed with 3 children and 10 grandchildren. Eddie died in 1986 and Jean now has 12 great grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren.
Jean is to be commended for committing to attend the reunion when you consider it is 952 kilometres from Griffith to Port Macquarie.
Janet Martin was born in 1917 and will have turned 91 before the reunion. At Parramatta in 1940, Janet married Frank Horley – descendent of Alfred Horley and Louisa Blencowe and the couple celebrated 60 years together before Frank died in 2000. Frank and Janet had two daughters who have given them five grandsons and 9 great grandchildren.
Coincidentally, the grandchildren of both Jean and Janet grew up playing cricket and football together without realising they were 5th cousins once removed. Their common ancestors were James Blencowe and Thomasine Loveday of Brackley England. The reunion will be the first time these families have been together since knowing of this relationship.
We hope these grand ladies and their families have a wonderful weekend.
Anne
