'Outstanding volunteer' Michael Blencowe scoops award Hastings St Leonard Observer 12/01/2010
Michael Blencowe of Friston has been honoured with an Outstanding Volunteer Award by the charity Butterfly Conservation in recognition of his outstanding commitment and dedication to the conservation of endangered butterflies and moths. As a member of Butterfly Conservation's Sussex branch committee Michael has worked tirelessly to protect and promote butterflies, moths and their habitats.
As well as managing the nature reserve at Park Corner Heath near Uckfield he regularly leads butterfly walks, gives illustrated talks, arranges educational events and spends hours monitoring the populations of butterflies and moths in the county.
Michael has made a major contribution to protecting declining species in the county, most notably the rare Grayling butterfly. Each summer he arranges the unique 'Sussex Grayling Festival' which involves both 'serious science' and a popular calendar of social events for butterfly-watchers.
Michael commented on his award, "I will always work hard to safeguard the future of butterflies and moths in Sussex. Butterflies are a beautiful and crucial part of our natural heritage and valuable indicators of the health of our environment. By reversing their decline we can make a better world for us all to live in."
