Evelyn Jean Luhrs 1915-2012
Jean, the eldest daughter of George Henry & Edith Agnes Blencowe, recently died of cancer in Griffith NSW. She was predeceased by husband, Eddie Luhrs, daughter, Joan Hicks and most siblings. Sons Kevin and Allen survive her.
Jeans nephew, Wilfred Blencowe, plotted our ancestry back via Brackley to the early Squires of Marston St Lawrence in the 1970s. However, it was Jean who from 2000 to 2003 helped me fill out our Australian branch of the tree. Over many late night phone calls followed up with written family data, gradually all the descendants of my Great grandparents, George & Matilda were recorded.
My father, Harold Blencowe and Jean were cousins, yet I learnt more about our family from her twig than ours. This culminated in a reunion in Griffith in 2004 which ultimately gave Fran and I the courage to stage the Port Macquarie reunion in 2008. We knew, if no one else turned up, that Jean and her sister, Beryl would make sure that about 60 of our family at least would attend.
Family from several states wended their way over flood damaged roads to Leeton to farewell the matriarch of our family, a lady who was so proud to have been born a Blencowe Anne
